Jeff Harns first took over this team when they were playing U12, and was his first team coaching at the club level. Many of these young men are still on the team this season, and it means so much to Jeff that he gets to coach them in their last year of club soccer. When asked about his experience coaching the team, Coach Harns said “It has been an incredible journey with these men. I say men because I have had the great opportunity to watch them grow and become great young men, no longer boys.” When Coach Harns started with these now young men on their journey, they were a new team and competed at the AA-C level. Coach Harns saw the potential in this young rag tag team of eleven and twelve year-olds, he knew that was not where they wanted to be. In the years that followed this group moved up the ranks, gaining essential game play skills and growing their soccer knowledge. They have, every year, continued to add pieces to the puzzle that make them more and more competitive. This season they are an SDDA team and can compete with top teams in the region. This is no small feat for the nation’s most competitive region, Cal-South.
Prior to arriving in the club soccer world, Coach Harns, “had no idea what to expect, but it has been the most amazing journey. I have had opportunities to meet some amazing players, coaches, and parents, making some life-long relationships.” It is something special to be with the same group of kids for seven years. Coming from the background of high school soccer, Coach Harns typically worked with players for only one, or maybe two years. But seeing a player transform over the course of years has been a rewarding experience. Coach Harns describes this group as, “one of the hardest working groups I have had the pleasure to work with.” He attributes their work ethic to their desire to be great. They want to work hard, knowing that it is the key to success. But not only does this group work extremely hard, “they take what they are told and apply it right away to their practice session or game,” says Coach Harns.
Looking back through the years, Coach Harns is proud and pleased with the group of young men coming out of Sporting SD. Whether or not these players continue to pursue their soccer dreams after this season, or take a step into the next chapter of their lives, this group will do great things. The lessons they have learned from games won and lost, each other, and their Coach, has prepared them for not only club soccer and this season, but for the journey that comes next.
